I heard very short QSO's on this freq the past few days,

I know it's the down link from the ISS (NA1SS) I've heard them several times the past few years. but it was always a one sided QSO, I could hear them, but not the ground stations.  I understand this.

but,, now I'm hearing very short QSO's and they are exchanging grid square numbers.  I did a Google search on the freq and it comes back  to a satellite  freq for packet..
I'm a genius, but I can't decipher packet in my head..

any ideas??
i know Nationwide has some experience in this work..

edit:
Google keeps refering to AX25, which is a packet bird

It was most likely the ISS voice repeater and you'd hear both sides of the conversation. The one sided conversations only happen when talking to the crew - you'd hear the crew but not the earth bound parties talking to them, however the crew doesn't talk that often. In voice repeater mode (which it's in most of the time) the ISS repeats like a normal earth bound repeater thus you'd hear both/all parties.

AX25 is the protocol used for APRS packets (and other things), the ISS has an APRS digipeater on 145.825 and it's almost always active. I've digipeated w/ the ISS before but have yet to do a voice QSO but often listen to them.

that makes sence.. I didn't know they had a voice repeater onboard, I always thought it was up/down link separate freq's
thanks.

For voice repeater uplink is 437.8, down is 145.8, no PL needed. For digipeating up and down are 145.825. To make crew contact (when they are active) up is 144.49, down is 145.8. Don't forget to add in Doppler effect compensation.

They do change things around from time to time so always check:

I'm 2m only so 437.8 is out of the question.  Do I just use 144.49/145.8 then?

No, 144.49 won't do you any good except to talk to the crew. Otherwise you can only listen on 2m unless you want to do packets on 145.825.
