I'd like to leave my HT on a repeater frequency, i.e. monitoring, but I only want to hear voice calls from my buddies.

In simplex, you can set the CTSS and tone. But when using a repeater you use that to link to the repeater.

Is there a way to transmit a tone after the repeater link tone itself has been sent? (and a way on the radio to unsquelch on that tone)

IT will be a pain in the butt to do it through a repeater. Only DSTAR has a capability like that that I know of currently. The closest you are gonna get is a pocket beep function but anybody can activate it with the right CTCSS/DTS tone. With simplex this is much easier.

Hmmm... I'll be interested to hear this answer.  Aside from the fact that I don't see the point, I'm just curious.  I'm guessing it is possible if the repeater you are using does not require tones.

I am guessing this might work, assuming the repeater passes the tone.

Repeaters don't pass CTCSS tones typically, as they are below the normal audio frequency cutoff.

One solution would be DTMF paging which most modern transceivers support as it's popular in Japan.  It will only work if the repeater passes DTMF tones, some repeater controllers are set up to block them.  Try sending a DTMF tone and see if it comes across or if it's muted.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the manual and see what the HT can do for DTMF unsquelch.
