| So, a friend of mine suggested that I take the HAM test, mainly as a means of communication should conventional methods fail (SHTF type situation). Sounds fun, and there seems to be a group of WAHTF ARFCOMers that talk on a regular basis...am I correct on that? Anyways, I would love to get into it, but with a low-wage job, one baby, and one more on the way the cash is understandably tight. What is the cheapest setup I could pick up and still be able to reach a fair enough distance? I thought about getting a CB for my car as well, for more short range stuff...any comments on that? Maybe one of you has a used setup you are looking to sell? (already checked the EE) Thanks! |

It is fun, I have been into it for about 9 months now. You could pick up a used 2 meter mobile or handheld radio for around $100. You can span quite a distance by using a repeater. It's also useful for when camping or 4x4ing in places in remote places where cell phones don't work. Check with your friends to see what bands they are using.
The Technician license is pretty easy and is enough to get you started. Start taking the practice exams at http://www.qrz.com/testing.html |

hello and welcome to the ham part of the ARFCOM.
yes we have a nightly net, sometimes the band cooperates, othr nights it don't . Ham radio can cost alot, or not much. $14 for lic test (lifetime license) $130 for 2 meter radio, $25-$60 for mobile antenna $130 for hand held 2 meter radio. a few guys localy only have a HT works good for repeater stuff. I started with a mobile radio, mag mount antenna, and homemade base antenna. moved it from car to house every day. I did get a HF radio from ebay for $200 and still using that for "world wide" stuff. your in Washington State?? lots of repeaters out there. lots of repeaters everywhrere. check out the stuff at the top of this page for alot of good down to earth info. have fun, post often.
