I went with the Yaesu VX-6R. I know the 8 is coming out, but after reviewing the VX7 manual the 6R made more since to me and since I will be starting out I don't need all the bells and whistles yet. I've read once you get started most folks wind up with several HT's . Once I pass my General I will start look at a mobile rig for my truck.

Congrats, guys.  I just passed, too.

I found this most helpful for the Tech.

www.w5ddl.org/techppt/chapter_pps.htm  Download the first file.  It contains all of the class presentations for the Tech.

If you don't have PowerPoint Viewer on your computer, the second link on that page will bring you to a free download.

Those class presentations brought my scores up on the Tech practice tests from 80%-85% to 95%-100%.

And here's a good study guide:

w5yd.org.msstate.edu/new_site/files/Element2_Study_Guide.pdf

From the same site, here's a good study guide for the General.

w5yd.org.msstate.edu/new_site/files/Element3_Study_Guide.pdf

Unfortunately, this guide has not yet been updated for the current batch of questions:

w5yd.org.msstate.edu/new_site/files/Element4_Study_Guide.pdf

Practice tests here.  These are all good:

www.qrz.com/ham/

www.radioexam.org/

aa9pw.com/radio/

www.eham.net/exams/

www.w8mhb.com/exam/

I made it a point to use a different site (from the links above) each time I did the practice tests.  And make sure do a different test each time.   While the tests are pulled from the same pool of questions, they are different questions.  Look at the ones you missed and review.

Congrats!!

I used the online tests on eham and qrz and found them to be helpful.

Best of luck on the General exam.

Awesome set of resources there, many thanks.  We are looking at trying to get a bunch of cow-orkers licensed, and just discovered that the Power Point Presentation* we had was out of date! I was supposed to be updating it, now I can go shooting on my day off, except I can't afford ammo...

*Note that I still believe that PowerPoint is a Tool Of the Devil..

And at the price of gas, can't afford to DRIVE to the range, either!  LOL!

Well, those powerpoints on the site I listed were a big help to me.  I hope they help for your classes, too.  They say on the site you are free to use them.

I'm sure I missed out on being able to raise a hand and ask a question of an actual instructor, but these were real close.  I think a good balance of teaching the material and teaching "to the test".

If you R near the northern NC border we might be able to find a mutual repeater to work.

Welcome!  I'm still a Tech after a few years and not really interested in the HF personally.  I can barely afford the UHF/VHF stuff I have now!

I'm about 30 miles south of Statesville. Know of any linked repeaters?
