I just bought a FT-7800 with everything except the control head cable. If I'm looking at this diagram correctly, it appears that it's an RJ-11/14/25 cable.

How would I make a homebrew cable, rather than buy a complete separation kit? Is it the same at the 8800R/8900R? (Inexpensive FT-8800R Separation Cable)

Piece of cake. Go to Radio Shack and buy their overpriced 6-conductor ribbon cable. Cut to length. Add new 6-pin connector and do continuity check to ensure you have a straight-pin configuration. I've made a couple of them. It's about 5 min worth of work.

I'd like to find some small, round 6-conductor like the actual separation kit includes but I'm lazy.

Category 3 should do the trick. At least that is what I used to extend my mic cable on my 8800, that and a leviton gigamax RJ-45 jack.

You didn't find it too thick? Maybe I need to look at it again. I'm sure I've got some in a drawer somewhere.

Just measured what I have in my jeep.

YSK separation cable thickness - .157"
Cat 3 cable thickness - .170"

For my application it works just perfect cheap too!

Sweet! I'll have to start digging.
