If you have a technicians license does that cover LMR channels or does one need to purchase that seperately?

No, an amateur license only covers the amateur bands and services.  Commercial/business or public safety land mobile is completely separate.

However, having read your posts in the "First HT" thread... keep in mind when they say the HX370 has 40 programmable "LMR" channels, it just means you can program *any* freq from 137-174 MHz (I might be rusty on those exact numbers).

So in essence you use the HX370's "LMR" channel capability to program those slots to Ham 2m frequencies. Gamma's reply is completely accurate but I wanted to "read in" to your question just in case that's the ultimate answer you were going for.

I think you are reading into my question correctly. I am thinking of having my technicians license, and then having the LMR as an option for other uses with the same radio.

Now I could be wrong in my line of thinking, but LMR use similar to GMRS.

As you can see, I am still learning all of this stuff.

Land Mobile radio is all licensed and almost all frequency coordinated.  Licensing is expensive and not available for "personal" use... other services like amateur, GMRS, FRS, MURS are for "personal" uses.

A radio which is type accepted for LMR (part 90 IIRC) is legal for amateur and GMRS use, I think marine also.  Having the radio doesn't mean you have a license for those frequencies though.

Be a little more specific about what you want the radio to be able to do and we can give you better information on how to proceed.

That's right, work radios or LMR's, when licensed to a company for use, that company is given a frequency or range of frequencies or frequencies  for the exclusive use of by that company.  The range is far better too.  Surprisingly down here in South Texas there are only a handful licensed, or less than you would expect - it is serious business.
