One of my 3 three sons, the oldest got his Tech ticket in the mail yesterday

I had told him if he would study and pas I'd get him a new HT,  well he studied and missed it by a few when he was like 11yo.  He didn't mess with it again for about four years but he took the test last week, passed and turned 16 on the 25th. I gave him the new VX-150(I bought one for me a month ago) a few days after passing.  For his Birthday he got a used mobile rig for his "shack(Bedroom)" Got a ADI AR-146 from a ham out in NY, he said he included a gift for him also.  When it arrived there was a appears new in box MFJ 812B SWR meter, COOL!.  I had a new AS VHF ground plan and some new RG-213 laying around and he bought himself a tripod and we put it up between burst of rain, snow, sun LOL  He was able to get checked in to 3 nets Sun night using "his radio"

He learned some repair skills as the AR 146 came with 5 burnt bulbs that illuminate the LCD.  We picked them up and replaced them last night.  He learned how to figure and cut a ant. for freq. as the AS ground plane was like 26" before we retuned it down to almost a perfect match at Ctr. freq. He spent most of last evening working the area for 2 mtr. activity.

Traprmike - I tried to catch you last Thursday, it was while John and you qso but you got away I think as I couldn't make contact with ya.  His ant is below the peak and on the west side so I don't know if he'll be able to work you at qth simplex??

Well now he is studying for General so  he can "work the world"

well thats all I have, Just a proud Dad

Very good on having a new ham in the family. I bribed my son to get his license even though he didn't really have a lot of interest in it. It really gave me a lot of satisfaction to see him pass. Unlike your son, mine is pretty much an appliance operator, but it works for me.

Congrats,

RS

Nice story! My son's not quite 3 but we already have him on video and in various pictures using my radio (or so he thinks) and/or headphones. He has actually talked on the radio to my buddy but I was a good control operator. He knows how to turn my HF rig on so I have to be careful. I hope he'll get licensed and we can enjoy the hobby together.
