When setting up outdoor portable operations what do you used for a ground?  Bring a copper spike with you?

I bought a grounding rod, cut it in half and sharpened it up a bit.  Most of the time I can push it a few feet into the ground by hand.

I use a cut off ground rod. I took a six inch section and welded it to one end and made a T so I have something to drive and pull it back out when I am done.

Depends on the kind of ground you are looking for.  Electrical safety ground? Lightning protection? RF ground?  If RF, what kind of frequencies?  Is this for an antenna or at the rig?

RF Ground is not really feasible in this situation.  Mostly something to bleed the static off to.  If Lightening is in the area I'm breaking it down and getting to cover anyway.

There is no such thing as an "RF ground".

I strongly encourage you to read Jim Brown's (K9YC) article:
