It's still going every now and then -- pretty much same guys that were active before, plus a few more.

And congrats on the promotion, Slasher

Nah, we bounce around and just hook up by emails/PM's etc.

Kudos to Slasher to try and standardize things with a time and some frequencies! Somebody throw out suggestions.

40 is about as low as I can tune my G5RV Jr. Most people don't have room for bigger antennas anyway.

Considering the distances involved in getting all the hams here on the same band, I suggest using 20 meters.  The upper end of 20 is usually quiet at night so pick something over 14.300.  If I were in charge, I'd probably suggest 14.213 14.313 say at 10:00 PM Eastern so as to include the largest nubmer of arfcommers.  If somebody wants to pick a day (other than Monday), I'd be glad to join in.

When the sunspots return, that could probably move to the 10 meter band to include the Techs here.  Right now though, 10 is just not reliable enough.

In order to run this net we need 2 HAM's that will volunteer to coordinate this effort.

They will need to be available somewhat to set this up as well as direct the net.

I would like for volunteers to IM me with their experience and a loose plan of what they have in mind.

Want the job?  Then step and play.

Thx

7 to 8pm Eastern would work for me....that's my commute time home and I got the 857 and sidekick antenna to cover 80m thru 6m.... 40m or 20m would fine.

You should post a freq, and the time in the CQ thread and then try there at the time

By the way... I just discovered that 14.313 has a bad reputation.  It seems there are a bunch of complete idiots that have made a home there.  Its known for cursing, playing broadcast radio and other unprofessional practices.  I picked that frequency by random and it was a bad pick.  The upper part of 20 is under-used in the US from what I have heard.  The only activity I hear above 14.300 is on 14.320 which is usually a Spanish language net and now these idiots.

The only down side to this is that the MUF often hovers around this area of the band.  It may not be usable at all times.  Last night I could hear where the MUF was and it moved from 14.280 up to 14.330 by midnight here in VA.

So... anybody want to pick an alternate meeting frequency?

Stay away from 14.300. That's home to the Maritime Mobile Net. Had to stop my nephew last night when he started calling CQ.

NO NO NO NO!!!!  Stay off 14.275.  There are web site dedicated to the idiotic behavior that goes on there, mostly from a Polish immigrant living in Canada.  He runs well over the US legal limit, curses, sings, plays music and rants for hours at a time.  Meanwhile, US stations intentionally QRM him.  Its bad.

I like the .75 step, but that's not a good one.  Better to use 07, 94 or 26 to name a few.

Part of the problem is that some people have different regional issues.  For instance, I have massive QRM on 14.196 to 14.200 and again from 14.296 to 14.300.  I also hear the idiot on 14.275 but rarely hear the QRMers.  I know they are there but I can't hear them often.

What is really unfortunate is that the cleaner parts of the bands are all where only Extras can play.  That's true on all bands.  There are fewer foreign radio stations between 7.125 and 7.175.  There are fewer idiot nets between 3.6 and 3.8.  There is less noise in the range of 14.150 and 14.225 than there is above it.

I know 20 fairly well.  In the area that is open to Generals, here are some guide lines.  14.230 is for slow scan TV and often has digital noise from 14.228 to 14.332.  There are often nets on 14.237 and .238.  14.240 .45 and .50 have frequent nets as well, but not as regular as the .237.  14.260 to 14.267 are busy most evenings.  14.275 is a nightmare.  There seems to be a fair amount of DXing at .280 to .287.  14.300 is the maritime mobile emergency net and 14.313 is an idiot net.  14.320 is often covered by a Spanish language net.

If you want to be safe as far as competing with other nets and DXing, the best bet is right near the upper band edge.  The down side is that the MUF lately has been a bit below that and its usually a bit noisy with QRN.  We could plop down at 14.345 with little fear of other nets but might be overrun by atmospheric static.  14.307 might be a good compromise.  I don't think I've heard a lot of activity there and IIRC, its usually not overrun by QRN.

As for 40, there is a semi-permanent net at 7.178.  7.210 and 7.220 frequently have "big gun" nets that bleed all over 3 to 4 KHz in both directions.  7.240 to 7.260 has a brutal foreign broadcast schedule and several daytime nets (ecars, midcars and southcars).  7.292 I think has a regular big gun net.  Using something near the very top like 7.296 might be worth considering or something just under 7.200.

As for 75/80, I have no idea except that 3.872 has the Marconi Net every weeknight which gets QRMed from a bunch of CB rejects.

By the way... this is all based on fairly limited samples.  I listen more on 20 than anything else.  My observations should be compared to others who are paying attention before settling on anything.

Probably.  He's out of his mind.  Listening to him rant is like watching a train wreck.

Scoutmater, I didn't mean to run you off the discussion.  Quite the contrary, I just wanted to throw my observations out there to compare to others.  By sharing things like this, maybe we can figure out where and how best to communicate.

Incidentally, I'm working on solving some noise issues I have in my QTH.  If I can get that handled, I'll volunteer to be one of the coordinators of this.  I don't have an amp so I may not be the right guy anyway, but I'll see what happens when I get the noise down here.

What have conditions been like on 17M? I've been away from HR for a while but an arfcom net might motivate me to get back to it. Took my G5RV down this weekend, the tree that supported it died. I've got a new GAP Titan in the box that has been in the box for several years, looking for an excuse to put it up.
