I don't have a particular fish in mind, just want a good all-purpose spinning reel. Not sure what size to start with. What is a popular size for a newb?

I use a 3000 size reel for fishing here in Ohio.

Thanks bud. Going for the 4000. Only 5 ounces heavier than the 3000.

I have Battle II 2500s for general purpose freshwater and inshore salt. Very happy with them for the price, and I don't worry about beating them up like I did with the fancy reels I used to buy.

It really depends on what you are fishing for.  Will you be fresh water or salt water?  I have the 5000 for saltwater bottom fishing.
