I've used spinning reels almost exclusively all my life but now during my "end of life crisis" I want to try BC for a change and I would like some recommendations. I've been to all of the local stores to try out their stock of BC equipment. I want to cast light to medium weight lures for bass and whatever bait that catches Crappie. I've always used 10 pound line but I know that some bass fishermen use heavier lines.
I'll have to get used to the rather stiff graphite rods! Shimano and Pfeluger (SP) feel good and the spool release on these are fairly smooth but not as smooth as the ABU reels in the $90-$140 range. I will appreciate any recommendations for reels in this price range. TIA |

Check out the Okuma Citrix. You can get them on ebay for about $90 and are extremely smooth.
Other than that, i would stick to Shimano or Abu bait casters. You're not going to wan to fish light baits with bait casting equipment. That's asking for an over run. Bait casting equipment works best with heavy lines and medium to heavy lures. Great for bass fishing, not good for crappie/bream fishing. I would stick to the spinning equipment for those. |

Thanks for all the info. I've got an ABU Revo S coming next Wed. $99 at TW + free shipping. Academy has the C3s for $79 and might pick up one of those. I ordered a Veritas from Amazon and it got here broken. Seems like several of the Abu rods are breaking from what I read. I'm going to buy one of the H2O rods from Academy........I have a Fenwick 7'MH Spinning rod.
Tried putting the license on my boat trailer this morning and the holder was broken. Soon as I get that on and the R&Rs on board Maybe I'll get to go fishing before fall |
| I love my Bass Pro Johnny Morris Carbon. I have a Revo SX that is awesome too. I like them both but the price was better on the BPS. I also have a Wright and Mcgill that was inexpensive that was decent. I personally don't care for the Curado's and the way they fit my hand. I do know that they are awesome reels though. You will love your Revo, and my Veritas hasn't broke on me yet. |

Two words: Shimano Curado. You need to find the 100 size from a few years ago. Quoted:
you will never go wrong with a shimano curado, and a St. Croix rod falcon rod........ FIFY Shimano Curado or Shimano Chronarc are both great reels. Medium to medium light action Falcon, All Star or Carrot Stix rod would make a great combo IMO. |

Last season I switched from Revo STX's/Premiers, to all Daiwa reels and couldn't be happier.
I also took all of my spinning reels out of my usual 10-12 rods on the boat and replaced them with Daiwa Pixys for all of my finesse fishing. 7lb. fluoro and small weightless plastics are no issue with these BC reels. A Revo S will be a good reel to start on. I see too many people new to BC's that start on a cheap reel and get so frustrated with it that they just give up on BC reels, a cheap reel will only cause headaches. |
