Everybody else--only watches movies, never reads anything. My stepdaughter's first boyfriend told us at one point in time that he had never read an entire book in his life, he did buy car magazines but usually only read the captions on the pictures. He was actually kind of proud of that. Personally, I'd rather read a news story, for example, than watch a video with the exact same words. |

MD am routinely shocked at volume of people who don't read/never read/can't imagine reading. Definitely a majority, enhanced by quick step flash media/news/etc. Culture/education/and third rail cannot be discussed ever: IQ: Takes significant bandwidth/RAM to access/process words into images into meaning into memory. But there is a window here, closing rapidly: The medium of training/co-ordination/execution/value in AI is prompting. And the tool for accurate prompting is, for just a little while? English. Spoken/written language. |

Something has changed in the last couple of decades with regards to reading. I'm not sure if it's due to everyone carrying around the internet in their pockets or if everyone has developed a short attention span by being addicted to short form content. It's probably some combination of the two. Before smart phones were around, I carried a paperback or sometimes a magazine around to read when I had time to kill. At work, people would sit around in groups and have conversations when there was downtime. Now everyone has their phones out. Thinking about it now, I'd probably be willing to bet the lack of conversation and human interaction that came from the proliferation of smart phones is probably more harmful to society than the short form content. Having people you know personally challenge your beliefs or be there to discuss events or topics with you helps people find common ground and probably helps to temper more extreme ideologies by showing people first hand that most people probably don't agree with you 100%. When you get to do 99% of your "socializing" online, you're going to end up in an echo chamber. Lord knows what kind of social issues will arise from people not knowing how to strike up a conversation with a stranger. I can't count how many great conversations I've had with random people on airplanes, in bars or restaurants or even just out and about. |

--DFarm totally agree on books magazines printed media. Always had a book. Magazine subscriptions--The Economist, Scientific American, maximum newspapers, everything. Amazing conversations in airports all over the world with total strangers. Offered some amazing jobs in airports/planes just because I knew what someone was talking about from general interest/reading. The phones have totally fffed us up. I know my retention/attention is less/shorter. Now imagine AI that will be able to model a grunt of dissatisfaction and create a solution with no language whatsoever. Back to the animal kingdom. |

--Moon--one thing about getting older is observing every conversation/film/media/communication and KNOWING with 99 percent certainty what it is/will be after 30 seconds of introduction. There is a severe lack of novelty from external stimuli. One of the only upsides of this AI chaos? It is at least fascinating. Not a shill: Anyone here who has not read "Wet or Dry" on my Amazon page: Just read the intro and SAMPLE--DO NOT BUY--IT IS NOT COMPLETE-- The story is specifically about AI/effects of AI. I wrote that in 2006. 20 years ago. It is happening now. |

I think the variety of content/media is to blame for not tolerating things you weren't interested in. How many times have you read a magazine or newspaper that you weren't actually interested in, but it was in the waiting room or break room while you were in there? We don't have to do that anymore. Same with conversations. A lot of conversations get started out of boredom or awkwardness brought about by having to share a boring situation with another person. Phones ruined boredom. |

I think it's similar to "just in time" inventory/production management. It works when everything is fine (looking up quick definitions, specs or instructions) but when you need to solve a problem that requires experience and understanding, it's like the delivery truck had an accident or a step in the assembly line has backed up. |

--DFarm--can't stop the signal. I like clever phrasing. "Phones killed..." Consciousness.... --DesignatedM--well when I was thinking about writing decades ago the AI phenom had my larger interest. Until, you know, other events... --STJ as an engineer who received the last generation of classical education "solve this problem (from memory)(with logic) you and I and many here for different reasons and timing will be the last generation that ever had "to figure things out" without assistance. People think phones and the net made us stupid--wait and see what AGI does--it's doing it now every second. Engineer Girl my house says about 1 in one hundred of her peer group can still think for themselves. She is horrified. On the other hand: provides her an immense moat: her peer group does not know enough to properly prompt AI tools, or judge the results. --Exactly, DFarm, STJ,--if the AI/internet/etc. fucks up--you see the results--but you may not have a clue how it fucked up. This is going to be epic. |

| I've said it before, but you need to finish Wet or Dry. I appreciate the difference in your writing style between Injured or Soldier's Son and Wet or Dry, your prose seems more relaxed and less clipped or stripped down. It's reminiscent of Heinlein I think. And I want to find out what happens with the Blue Max. |

--DM--deeply appreciate the support. But nobody who ever actually watched me "write"-- would insist that for my own well-being and state of mind, I never ever ever ever consider such an activity again. Briefly, imagine you have seen a movie. And you can rewatch every single frame. Down to the texture of a button, a fabric, a grain of sand. Now you have to rewatch the movie hundreds of thousands of times, select amongst the grains of sand, and describe them in accurate, evocative, timely, resonant prose. The problem is not selecting. It is selecting against. Discarding. And so on. |

--STJ that is some funny shit. I am fiddling with the "best" image engines right now. Pretty clearly they have zero scraping/data/history on the kind of shit I want to make. It takes about two hours just to get a reasonable picture of a boat at night that doesn't look like an airbrushed cartoon. Software Girl has had some seriously outlandish and even dangerous results from her super class code monkey peers who can't prompt worth shit. Boilerplate code will/is being done by high end engines, but architecture/integrations/customer facing design and a bunch of other stuff is super crude. It is the code and aesthetic equivalent of AI instagram sluts. My spidey sense says that once the Sam Altman's try to incorporate their AI engines into robots/real world, some really grim scenarios will play out. Can't remember, Spain, maybe Portugal, the first Waymo driverless taxis were torched. No more Waymo. Unescorted delivery bots may work in a country as regimented as Japan, and...and... and....maybe...Ok, Japan. Anywhere else, I see problems. And I don't mean graffiti. What will the penalty be for spray painting boobs on a delivery bot? What will the penalty be for accidentally spraying one with a penetrating solvent? When I met Software Girl, I told her there were would be robot wars before I died, meaning people wouldn't put up with that shit....don't think I will have to wait that long.... Can't wait to see the security around a bunch of 100 billion dollar server farms. Better make it real tight, boys. This is going to be a real mess. |

--Designated, indeed. Super curious at deep karma level how this will play out. There is a great video that links all the AI owner/gurus talking about the marvelous new world they intend to own. The video is spliced to show their reactions when asked about job loss, future jobs, etc. They all squirm like slugs. --DFarm, the bots are way past doing flips and dancing the macarena. The real advances are vision/spacial orientation/dexterity/compute. There are videos of warehouses of Chinese workers wearing motion capture suits and doing common tasks to load memory, the new concept is synthetic data--world building from core principles and then training activity in "the matrix"--ad infinitum. NO, manual labor jobs are not safe. At all. |

Also something to always remember with any tech is you've probably never even seen cutting edge, ever. Rule of thumb: if you've seen even a teaser video or article, it's old or about to be retired, it's replacement is operational, and the third gen is either in development or being fielded. That was true decades ago. Now? I can only imagine. |

--Designated I hope you are correct but I don't see a way around a general sense of loss of purpose and agency in providing a useful role for fellow men. Well retired people presumably can "express themselves" (go fishing) but they do so with the subconscious knowledge that they "earned" their retirement. And with lack of agency comes loss of power, representation, authority. If labor know longer has any bargaining power? Who is going to be happy knowing that the owners of AI have all bargaining power? Not many, I think. Our entire psyche is determined by reducing scarcity. Reducing scarcity for other people is how one achieves wealth, status, and a future for their children. You are clearly paying attention. Name the NEW jobs created by AI that will employ hundreds of millions of people. So far, I have not seen anybody name one. |

Name the NEW jobs created by AI that will employ hundreds of millions of people. So far, I have not seen anybody name one. Something mentioned several times in this thread is that automation has gotten us part of the way there already. Robots currently on production/assembly/distribution floors don't add jobs. Some few jobs remain to program and maintain these robots, but they may be in the sub-1% realm depending on scale. AI + robotics will massively widen the markets served. We're watching the absolute erasure of the middle class and it's not happening slowly on a generational scale. Another factor in the discussion of people without purpose that needs to be considered is the recent political push to cut grift and waste is exposing just how much of the current job market is pure welfare/fake. We all knew welfare/government employees went over 50% of the working force some years ago, now we're seeing the true number is much higher. All just in time to see the beginning of AI pushing into the "big brain" jobs. Lack of agency, indeed. Interesting times. |

--CpnR, exactly on all counts. Rocket Man extols the virtue of large families, warns of population decline. Oh really? And what exactly will we need all those people for? As of now (meaning today and hopefully for a few more years) excellent AI prompting is very much a high IQ high data retention job. For how much longer? Every smart prompter is training AI to anticipate and execute better prompts. Try asking an AI for the best prompts. You will be astounded. Addenda: I used to love maps. I memorized maps that had bushes on them and I memorized the bushes. Now I use a phone. My mapping brain has been exterminated. Can't wait for my AI bot that can interpret a sigh. I won't even need to remember how to speak. |

--Moon, there will absolutely be resistance of some kind. Deeply fascinated to imagine what kind of argument and human "face" spokesperson will defend the rights of AI bot owners to "their property." That is going to be a very difficult kind of persuasion. --DFarm I suspect we will be like Amish with antique chemical weapons that might serve against a dog or a violent drunk but the AI/bot revolution is also be definition a total surveillance society by default--every bot will be recording any everything to train itself and other bots--just like Tesla cars do now. Resistance will be...observed immediately, reprimanded severely. STJ--a rhetorical question only--server farms will be/already are National Treasure Strategic Resource capital investment. Like, let's say, B1 bombers...and so on. --Butlerian Jihad--I hope not. A wise man would confine AI to material sciences and medicine. Such wise men do not exist. --"A whole country"--I am amazed at what shitty expositors this industry promotes to explain themselves. They look capable of anything. --They might keep fucking. We haven't even done the sex-bot cliche yet. I say 25 years max and 40,000 will buy an indistinguishable from real absent knife or pliers version of "whatever one wants"--buy, or lease...there will be a new profession, sex-bot repo man, with his own instagram tv series--maybe I should write it now? |

Former11--might be misreading tone--but as long as not being burned in a fire etc.-- choose fascination. All wars, inventions, cataclysms,--this future will be that epic. For good or ill. Been buying a few of these lately--might inlay then into a few rifle stocks: |

STJ much thanks, that's it/them. I can't/won't afford classic engraving, but I can afford multiples of the engraver's art on historical coins--particularly impressed by the relief stamping on the 1 crown Jubilee coin. |
