This buck is the same buck my wife missed last Saturday. Friday afternoon found us back in the same area. We were glassing and swatting mosquitoes and found a nice herd of elk. We found our antelope on the same hill about to go over the top. Where we were watching from was 600 yards and looking into the sun. We decided to make a move and come at them from the right. We topped the hill and found them less than 200 yards. She made a great shot with the 270 WSM and put it down.

I'm not sure anyone "gets it".  We just deal with it.

It's simple.

Every time you buy a tag (or a bonus point) you get a ticket in the lottery.

The number of tickets accumulate untill you fill your tag.

When you fill your tag all your tickets are taken away and you start at zero again.

Our system is not a preference system like NM has. In NM when they do the draw they start by fillings tags for the people with the most bonus points and work their way down to zero. If their are any tags left they just do a simple lottery.

In our system their is no preference, you just get better odds because you have more tickets in the barrel.

The OP's mom had 18 tickets in the barrel when she got drawn.

that's what I thought. you get more tickets but its still up to chance, that's why young kids get drawn for low draw odd hunts. its all chance.

Yes

I like it better that the NM style. In their style you have very little chance of getting drawn on your first year. I bet lot's of people just decide no to play.

I drew rifle deer and elk on my first try in 2011 Then deer last year and elk this year.

Also, in your post above you said NM has a bonus point system too.  That's not true.  The draws are completely random drawings. From the NMDGF website:

It’s important to understand that New Mexico’s big game drawings are subject to a quota system for most species (except oryx, ibex and bighorn sheep). In accordance with state law, the drawing attempts to distribute 84% of the licenses/permits for each hunt to New Mexico residents, 10% to residents and nonresidents who have contracted with an outfitter and 6% to nonresidents who haven’t contracted with an outfitter. New Mexico does NOT grant preference to applicants who were unsuccessful in previous drawings.

A random computer program shuffles all the applications like a deck of cards into a drawing sequence. The order your application lies in the sequence ultimately determines whether you’ll be successful or not.

When an application is drawn, the system attempts to distribute licenses/permits for the first hunt choice, subject to the quotas described above. If the drawing pool for the first hunt choice is already filled, the computer will try to assign the second hunt choice for that application and then the third choice.

In NM there are no points. You either draw or you don't. It's all done on a lottery system.
