I've been invite to Elk Camp this year and I'm pretty excited. Spike only in Washingon State. But for my first elk hunt I'm excited for it, plus my family loves elk meat.
I'm going to be staying a in a buddies Wall Tent with Stove. I got a zero degree bag, sleeping pad and a cot from Cabelas. I've been hunting Mule/Whitetail for a number of years. I have an Eberlestock pack, Danner Pronghorn boots etc. What are some of the things that you veterans have packed? Do you have a checklist of items. I don't want to pack too much or needless crap I end up not using. I'm going for 4 days. I'm going to use a REM 700 30.06 an 165grainers? I can punch 3wholes in almost the same spot @ 200 yards with this rifle. Is this an exceptable weight/round? |

Good placement will solve lots of problems though. Pack plenty of luck, I never seem to bring enough. |
| Your kit sounds GTG. The -06 with 165s is deadly. If you shoot it as well as you say you'd be crazy to change up. From what I've seen of WA elk country you're going to be just fine. You might consider some "big" meat processing gear like a bone saw and game bags. Caring for the meat right away is much more critical for larger animals. |

You need to have a Metal Match as well as several other fire-starting options on you any time you go into the Western mountains.
Practice your fire-starting before you leave. As previously mentioned, hydration is also very important. I like the Camelback-type packs. Break in your boots and socks well in advance as well. |
