| Just picked up a Rem 700 .300 win mag. I have some federal Vital shock 150gr ammo that I used to sight it in, good enough for elk? |
|
Shot placement is more important than bullet weight. I kill elk with a 165 gr bullet moving at 2600 fps.easily
You got it sighted in, did you practice shooting from field positions too? Never seems to be a bench in the field. You should be able to hit an 8" target from 100 yds all day long from a port arms carry rapidly. The ammo you chose is fine and not too spendy. Go shoot a couple more boxes from any position/range you think you may encounter. Have fun |

Have fun Project Appleseed I was just wondering if those particular 150's were enough bullet/velocity to be effective on an elk. This is my first "magnum" rifle, I have been using .308 and 30-06 for years and wasn't sure of the characteristics of the larger caliber w/lighter bullet. |

Good luck this season A friend of mine has probably killed more elk than any 5-10 of us put together, myself included. He has always used medium velocity hand loaded .270 with 130 grn Game Kings.Your magnum has much more power than his set up,I can guarantee you. If you notice on these caliber/load threads, you will see the "get a super magnumasaurous rex" from places where they elk aren't. I ditched a 300 WM for a 6.5 X55 using 140grn SSTs. A magnum won't kill them any deader, despite your best efforts. |

But a magnum shooting a light weight non premium bullet very fast into an elk shoulder could = disaster Magnums are not needed to kill elk but well placed and well constructed bullets are. The elk deserve no less. |
| I'm in the same boat, same gun. I'm working up a load with a Barnes 180 gr TTSX over RX 22. Currently pushing over 2900 fps, and looking for another 100. Extra velocity and energy will never hurt your chances of a one shot-dead right there-dropped in its shadow-didn't have to track him hunt. As long as you don't develop a flinch. It also depends on what kind of range you expect. If you want the option of a 500+ yard shot, a bigger bullet will get there better than a smaller one. But, you have to have the ability and confidence in your equipment to get there. My thoughts only, YMMV. Good luck. |

UPDATE : Field Tested: CEB - ESP RAPTOR : .308 QUOTE : " OK, I have a deer report this morning! I loaded a few of the 130 Raptors last week for my remodel contractor and friend of mine. He hunts deer every weekend, and shoots a 308 and I have been loading normally 150 Hornadys for him the last few years. Which has been a great bullet for him. Well today he tells me he wants nothing but Raptors from now on! He shot a doe the other day, "Doe Day" for meat mostly. I got a pretty detailed report, and pleased with that. I loaded the Raptors to around 2850 fps in his rifle, and they shot to the same POI as his standard Hornady load, so there was no downside on POI. Where he shot the other day is only around 65 yards, so it was close. The bullet entered left side, quartering away, so not a severe rear raking shot, about in between from what I can gather. The entrance hit a rib going in, tore a huge hole shown to me about 4 inches in diameter on the entrance, with liver hanging out of the entrance. Left lung completely torn in half, massive damage to right lung. Something hit spine and damaged 3 vertebrate??? Was not the bullet, as the main bullet exited on the right shoulder. Exit was a 30 caliber exit hole. Everything in between was totally destroyed I am told. Excessive damage to vital organs and tissues, very little to no meat damage at all, a good point for the meat hunters I suppose. Heart was not damaged or hit. It was bang, flop. No running, not even a step, bang and drop to the dirt. This is reported direct to me not 15 minutes ago. I give it to you as it was given to me. First words were, "That is one Bad Ass Bullet".
