Anyone have any experience with 375 Ruger? True it only has 3 factory loads from hornady, but I like the fact it is a shorter action and same ballistics as the H&H.
ETA I plan to use for Alaska hunt for Moose and Bear; and maybe Africa someday. |
I can tell you from experience that the H&H works. The Ruger ought to do just the same. I'm using 300gr TSXs at 2470 and they hit whitetails like a hammer. Mostly they just stumble and die where they fall. Come to think of it, thats what they did when I shot a 7x57...

I just can't see myself ever being that mad at a deer. |

M1A2Tanker,
I would go with the H&H. You will be able to find ammo a lot easier for the 375 H&H than the 375 Ruger. I have a rifle built on a mauser action. You will not notice the ~0.5 in difference in length when you work the bolt in the heat of the moment. 320pf |

I'm not planning on buying into any of Hornady's rounds that rely on their proprietary powders. You'll never be able to match them by reloading. Not until they start selling their powder, which they may never do.
As far as long versus short action, you won't notice as long as you have practiced and are used to the travel. |
| I've got a 375 Ruger and love it. No need to use special blended powders...there is more case capacity in the Ruger than the H&H and quite a bit of load data. I use 260gr Accubonds behind H4350. Also, the Ruger gets the same performance as the H&H using only a 20" barrel...as opposed to the H&H's ~23" barrel...if you go with the longer 23" barrel Ruger (the African model)....you get even better performance. That being said...I would only go the Ruger route if you plan to handload. I bought enough brass to last a lifetime for my 375 Ruger...doing that is the only way I can justify getting into a semi-odd-ball caliber that is not yet mainstream. Good luck with your decision. I don't think you'll be upset with either the 375 Ruger or the H&H. |

Interesting subject for a guy who is about to buy a .375 H&H,when asked why I just say "why not?" for me I've come to realize I have a thing for big cals like my first "hunting rifle" a Ruger No.1 in .338 (I didn't care for rust duty so I traded it..and to be honest it wasn't big enough! )Also one can't say you aren't ready to hunt anywhere with one so it fits my idea of a one-gun-for-everything. The .375 Ruger should be a dandy if you like it,I like old stuff. |
