| anybody got a special turkey reload that they would like to share |
+1 on heavy shot!!!! Watch the slow motion |
|
Knocked one down last year at 42 yards, 1 3/4 oz. of #5 copper coated. 12 ga, 3" shell. I watched this bird strut in over 150 yards of pasture and just couldn't take it any more. Knocked him down, just a little flopping around. Was amazed that it was 42 yards when I measured. Oh, these were the Winchester black box turkey loads. |
My Remington 1187 loves those 3" Duplex 2X6 shells - too bad you can't find them anymore. The new Federal Flite Control loads have patterned well for me but I haven't had a chance to use them on a bird yet. For the OP I would stick to factory buffered loads it's not like trap where you will be shooting a boat load of them. |
What's the big advantage of heavy shot? Is there really a noticeable difference? I've whacked a bunch of turkeys through the years, with the most recent being a nice one this past Saturday, and my Winchester Supreme 12 ga 3 1/2" #5s perform perfectly. What am I missing? |
I have two or three left. My son used the rest of the box TO KILL A PORUPINE! I'll mail you one when you use the one you have |

If you are using a 10 or 12 gauge and are keeping your shots 40 yards or less regular shells are fine. If you want to use a 20 gauge or shoot 50+ yards hevi shot is a must. My son shot his first turkey under twenty yards with a 20 gauge 3" mag Federal #4's. The turkey rolled but was up and running in a few seconds. My son ran it down but finished it off by SHOOTING IT IN THE CHEST! Oh well! He has since learned. I think the extra stopping power is nice and they pattern very well in my guns. MIKE. |
