At least it's really cooled off for you and the recent rains should help the ground for digging.

Keep us updated!

This is awesome OP.
I made the move recently too. Just haven't got the land part yet.

If you need some help, shoot me a PM. I'm probably pretty close to you.

I know somebody who lives where ONLY air-evac is a viable option, so I thought I would mention...as your mom grows older--20 years from now or so--she may need available care with quick access.  Don't know if your property can provide that, but it's something to think of.

Chops to you for wanting to bring her out there, and to her, for wanting to come out there.

That area is fairly far from hospitals.  I know the general area and I would say even lifeflight would be over an hour roundtrip.

I used to know that area fairly well. North of I-90, not so much.

Enjoy Idaho! You gonna take time to bust an elk this fall?

Just spent a week up around Priest.

Can't beat the sliding rocks when it's hot as balls.
Go during the week and its empty.

Following along OP!

2x6 walls vs your planned 2x4s dont cost much more and R19 better than R13.

Also, if you wrap the house with rigid foam insulation, you'll drastically reduce the thermal bridging from the studs and greatly increase your overall insulation level. It adds some cost but when it's minus 10 outside, you'll be very happy you did it and it will save money for as long as the building is standing.

I finished my deck yesterday! Ready to start on the walls.... I decided to go with 2x6 walls. I should have them up in a couple of days. Still looking for doors and a couple windows but hopefully I will stumble across something this week.Attachment Attached File

The front part of the land is buildings; the back half-acre is currently weeds. Wife wants to kill weeds by mowing, then planting alfalfa, THEN putting in a couple head of cows for butchering. (We have a large freezer the previous owner left behind.)

OP, the difference here is... almost surreal. The people here are friendly, almost Stepford Wives friendly! Our first visit here, people came up to us out of nowhere, shook our hands and started talking! We finally figured out that our first visit (in March-April) was just after the first weekend of spring weather, and everyone just felt good!

OP, about the best advice I can give you is this: Everyone I've known who has done what you are doing has said to live on the land for a year before building. That way you can figure out where the wind blows, what areas get soaked in a rain, where it's hot during the summer, etc.

Best of luck to you!

Good thread, keep the updates coming.

Are you going to throw dirt around the foundation to keep cold air from flowing under your floor?

Well I scored the windows and doors at the area Habitat for Humanity store.....
2 exterior doors and two insulated double pane  4x4 windows for $160!!!!!

That motivated me to get the front wall finished yesterday.

Yeah I dropped the ball on the windows and will be adding another header, but the door wasn’t, finished...... it is now. Along with my roof beam. Hopefully tomorrow I will get the rafters and the siding done.

Ridge post bearing on the center of a 3 - 2x6 flatwise header?

Typical header around here is 2 - 2x10s under the double top plate and we're only 30 psf snow.

Ridge post is 3 2x6 upright, not flat.

Have my front door and one window roughed in. Should have the other window and back door roughed in this evening. I’ll do the eaves in the morning and then I’ll be able to get the canvas up by Wednesday if the weather gods are smiling.....
