Completed my first hive split 1 Jun.  Checked today and queen is free from cage (see cage pix).  Shes got a yellow dot on her head.  Obtained her by mail. Providing them resources for couple weeks including this capped honey frame lifted from my Yellow Hive.  First honey run of year almost over...

Exciting!  What sort of pollen patty is that?  Who did you get the queen from?

I always put the queen cage in screen down so that if any honey or syrup falls on the cage she doesnt drown.  And i always put the cage on the opposite side from the entrance, just how i was taught.

Thanks for tip...I thought about that when I squished the cage between the two middle frames....honey started oozing....I just left the fifth frame out and didn't squish it in farther.  She didn't drown luckily and she was wandering around on initial hive inspections yesterday. I also put a fifth frame of capped honey back in yesterday.
Italian mated Queen ordered from Wildflower Meadows, CA. Ordered another for delivery 12 Jul...gonna split another before Aug.
