Late August is the right time to plant a fall garden, one of the few weather advantages of living in the South.

I like leaf lettuce because it's hard for the bugs to ruin the whole thing (if you're keeping an eye out).  With head lettuce, you get a borer in there, and they've took out the fruit of a whole plant.  And you can't see it in there until too late.

We always plant Black seeded Simpson, never planted Romaine, don't know why, but I would imagine it's about the same.

If you like greens and salads, I would encourage you to plant some Spinach at the same time.  Awesome in a salad!
