Having recently become inundated with apples, and many more to come before fall, I decided to build a cider press.  I found several ideas from the inter web, and got to work.  Using some rough sawn for the crosspieces and some old fir studs for the uprights, I made this:

I found the pot and made a disc of plywood to fit inside. The force from the jack does the rest.

Starting with about 50-60 or so pounds of washed apples, we went to work.

First mashing them up:

Then pressing:

Filling up some empty bottles netted us almost 3 gallons of cider:

Took about 45 minutes, and tastes damn good

This was my first attempt, and I will continue to refine the process, and maybe even throw some yeast in the mix and make it hard!

Awesome.  Way to go on making do with what you have.

That's a really cool idea. We too are getting tons of apples and were starting to think about a press.

Looks good. My dad used to make hard cider. He added some raisins and some orange pulp and it was very smooth. I wish I had paid more attention.

I made a grape press. I don't know if mine will work with apples. i may try it with pears since i grow them.

I used a sissors jack because i had an extra one. I bet you get better force with the hydro one.

Nice! We are hoping to put in an apple tree out back sometime soon.
