The first one resembles Lady Bug larva, but the color isn't right. Is the second one all black or is it green? Our Japanese Beetles look like small June Bugs, but that one looks too small. Check out number 22: Hister Beetle. http://www.insectidentification.org/beetles.asp |

Quoted: That first insect is a thrip. They don't cause too much damage in squash but can be rough on melons if you have any. |

The one that you guys say is a Thrip, do they eat aphids? I saw one this morning on a Mandevilla that had a bunch of aphids and was hoping he was going to chow down on them. If not then I'll be squashing them this evening. EDIT: Are we sure about thrips? I've looked at thousands of pics this morning and haven't found any that match what I have. I'll forward the pics to the county ag extension to see if they know too. |

I've been there numerous times but without knowing the genus or species its difficult to find anything. Doing a search for "small brown bug" or "black beetle' doesn't do much for me.
