I used three of the garden patch grow boxes a couple years ago with pretty good results. I'm looking for ideas on what to grow in them this year.  Anyone else use them?
We live in a subdivision with a "no garden" rule. The grow boxes let me do vegetables without getting bitched at by the HOA. The soil is crap in the back yard anyway. Our first son was born about 2 years ago, so the boxes have been sitting in the garage, but I think he is big enough to "help" with them this year. First year was 4 tomato plants and 6 pepper plants (jalapeño and bell). The tomatoes went crazy, way to large and reacted poorly to neighbors yard treatments. Yield was useable, but not what it should have been. The bell peppers kind of sucked, very small, but useable. Jalapeño peppers rocked. Great yield and good size/flavor.
This year I'm thinking two smaller variety tomatoes and jalapeño, but that will leave me one or one and a half empty boxes.
Has anyone tried spring planted garlic in these types of boxes?
Any other ideas?
This is in Central Ohio.

I might try the cucumbers, the squash I fear would go to waste in our house. How much space do you think I would need for the cucumbers? Must they lay on the ground or can you grow them on a lattice?
ETA the location is in full sun all but maybe an hour of the day.

Cucumbers grow well on a trellis.

If the bed is at least 8 inches deep potatoes might be fun for your son.  Another option is pole beans.

Google trash can potatoes.  This is my first year trying that method.

I might try the potatoes in another container. I know we would use them.

I'm trying potatoes in feed bags this year - similar approach.

Planted today.
Green beans (new this year)
Cucumbers (new this year)
Garlic (experiment, don't expect it to grow)
Tomatoes ( smaller variety this time)
Hot peppers (5 varieties )

I'm trying a DIY cover for my grow boxes because I'm a cheap ass. Green guard fabric scavenged from a dumpster.  With these boxes, I THINK the idea is to have no water into the soil from the top to avoid washing it into the base. The original covers appeared to be burlap backed by plastic. I think they helped avoid evaporation as well. The green guard (house wrap) should allow some air, while blocking water.  We'll see how it goes.
Overview of the huge garden plot.

My little helper (pretty sure he was just trying to kill the plants most of the time )

Ohhhhhh! Mud!

Looks like fun. I almost did potatoes, but I think I already overcrowded the boxes and figured for the effort involved potatoes just would not pay the dividends the other stuff does (for me).

I tried planting a friends garlic cloves, they are probably 9mo+ old. I don't think they are going to work, but it's worth a shot.

I'd like to say she'd be joining an elite group but membership has increased significantly as of late.

My wife is not fond of the bags either.
