My fall seedlings are starting to pop up which got me wondering - is anyone else doing a fall garden this year? If so what are you planting?
So far I have: carrots - a bunch of leftover seed-packets ends so we'll see which ones come up beets - detroid red romanesco broccoli (seeds) seedling broccoli from Lowe's brussel sprouts - catskill swiss chard - neon lights leek - americal flag lettuce - corn salad and buttercrunch snow peas - snowbird fava beans - from Amazon, no variety specified. turnips - golden globe collards - forgot to jot down variety |

I forget when they went in, but I've second planted carrots (Danver's 1/2) and two types of bush beans (Burpee's stringless and Roma II). The beans are doing excellent and have started producing over the last couple days. The carrots are slowly coming along and will see a row cover in the next couple days to help them along.
Radishes also went in the ground and will be ready to harvest in a week or so. Summer squash and zucchini went in a while back and we'll be picking those in a couple days. The wife planted broccoli and cabbage yesterday and they should do well considering they're supposed to be cold hardy hybrids from Burpee's. Other than those second plantings we still have leaf lettuce, swiss chard, rhubarb, egg plant and peppers producing. We also have a couple heirloom Marketmore cucumber plants that are hanging on for dear life. We're waiting for the last of the cukes to over-ripen so we can collect the seeds. |
| I was going to do a fall garden as usual but it had been so dry till this week that I held off. Now I am going to try a few potatos to see if maybe I can sneak some in before first freeze. Not likely but since I have old spuds already sprouting... really not too much to lose trying. |

Those are very nice looking carrots. Mine got a late start - not sure if they will amount to anything this year. I have pulled some lovely golden globe turnips, but I'm running a bit of an experiment to see how things do in the cold. It's supposed to hit 22 degrees tonight and I'm excited to see how it goes. So far they have survived around 28 degrees without blinking....we'll see.
Fall 2013 current account: cabbage, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts - fell to a caterpillar army early in the season beets and swiss chard - did not survive 28f and succumbed to the cold turnips - managed to produce nice bulbs at the bottom but the tops were so covered in aphids I carried that section straight to the trash. What a waste of greens I still have fava beans, snow peas, butter crunch lettuce, carrots, onions, garlic and parsnips in the fray and going strong! Go team! |
