So I am knew to this forum, I've posted in past years dealing with equipment etc. Did a huge GHB thread years ago but have really been away from the computer that last few years, at least away from forums.
An old GF had a hobby farm and it was everything I wouldn't want. She had it organized for maximum work, basically a slave to her animals. I learned I would never do that. I live in the suburbs, have a decently big yard and decent privacy and decided to start some gardening and raising of small animals. I have 5 chickens that we raised from chicks, they are coming up on laying age. I just got 4 Muscovy ducks, one male, three females that I want to raise chicks for meat. I plan to add New Zealand Rabbits soon, two females and one male, or maybe just have the females bred. I hunt deer, antelope, and boar, so my meat supply is pretty good overall. I figure if I could get one duck and rabbit every week or two added to the mix, and chicken eggs,  it would be pretty awesome. I'm hoping to have 25+ each of extra ducks and rabbits a year I can trade to some of my friends who buy whole cows and pigs, quarter buffalos etc. I'm also trying to arrange a trade with a friends cousin who does commercial fishing for salmon and halibut. Let's see, what else? I also live a mile from a GREAT crabbing spot, my GF and I both dive for them. I need to start spearfishing Lingcod and maybe Cabazon also. I'd like to eat a lot more fish I'm just a bit lazy about getting it. That's it, just introducing myself. I look forward to learning from members and the depth of experience here. I've started reading a few of the gardening threads and they are great. |

I knew I couldn't wait on the rabbits. I did the math and realized I wouldn't get meat until Christmas so I decided to get started.
Searched craigslist and went and met a Russian guy in Redmond, got two adult does and one buck. Bred the does with two other bucks so I should have diverse bloodlines, plus I wanted to talk with this guy more and see his operation and ask questions. He also breeds quail and pheasant, I'd love to but don't have the room. |
