Thought I'd post some composting pics. Didn't want intrude on another good composting thread in the forum.

Pretty simple stuff here. Make pile, turn when it stops being active (hot). The active pile is on the left, the finished pile is on the right. The second pic is our major carbon source which is coarse wood chips. We add in about 15 tons of stable waste a year which rounds things out. We compost pretty much everything. It's pretty neat to watch it all break down into black gold for the garden.

PSA: Don't compost meat scraps or carcasses unless you have big piles and a good bit of time.

We have a couple of stables where we go once a year or so. Usually end of with four dump trailer loads which we haul home.

ETA: Watch your local craigslist....every so often you'll see people who want to give away their stable waste.

Impressive! Started a compost pile of my own this year. Between lawn clippings and food waste I've got plenty of 'greens,' but I'm struggling to find enough 'browns' to keep things cooking. Of course I figure this fall there'll be plenty of dead leaves to get things moving again. Thanks for sharing.

for browns sometimes you have to get creative.

save the cores from TP and papertowels..

shredded newspapers.

I save small sticks that fall all year, just for the purpose of breaking them into smaller pieces to put in my pile.

dry grass is a brown. take some from your mower, spread it out and let it dry a few days. i just cut in a circle near my garden, let it dry, then rake it up.

my compost is just a barrel... if yours is like Ferals, saving a TP core wont help ya.

If you do decide to do caracass use a little hydrated lime with you carbon to ease the smell we do Cattle in a pile just a little bigger than that . We use rice hulls and chicken litter for our base mix with some starter compost for bacteria jump start. We turn it in 25-30 days, then turn again in 15-20 days. All that is left is the big bones. We do Chickens in a compost shed and they are done in about 45 days. We turn them once we move them from the smaller bins to the large bin, then the next stop is on the field. The bones from the chickens just disintegrate once they are out in the sun. Our neighbor uses a wood chipper to process his cattle bones. P.S. if you do decide to compost animal be sure to puncture the rumen or gut, other wise they swell and can pop uncovering your Caracas.

LOL, same here, although the dogs and hogs  (an ME) eat most of the beaver
We also toss a lot of rabbit, chicken and deer entrails andscraps in the piles.

I'm not real diligent about maintaining my piles: most stuff goes away, but once in a while I'll take a bite with the FEL and about gag!)

Here is a couple of pictures of our compost barn.

My outdoor pile for large animals is grown up with lamb squatter weeds, if you look closely you can see a cow skull.

Last picture I backed out a bit so you could see how grown up it really is. Sorry for the blur cell phone usually does better, I guess the skeeters were eating me worse than I thought.

Nice set up Sparky! Someday I hope to be in a position where I have my own "compost barn" among other things.

My food plots love it the liming action is worth it alone. Gardens if you put it down in the fall and till it in, asparagus thrives on compost.
