| Can anyone recommend a fig that is tolerant to humdity and less likely to get a fungus infection? I bought one at Lowe's early last year (and promptly lost the variety tag). I love the leaf shape, and I would really like to grow fresh figs, but I have been fighting fungus repeatedly. This year I thought I had it licked - the leaves all came in clean, and it looked fine until the summer started so wet. It almost died a few times, and I have been treating it with neem oil, but my goal for all of my perennials is to plant things that don't need too much babying and are fairly idiot-proof. |
| Thanks! I will have to try that. Since posting this I found a record of a new variety of fig called "golden celeste" that might be a bit more fungus resistant, but I haven't seen any around here and I don't know if I want to pay nursery prices (plus shipping) for something that is entirely likely to die anyway. |

I live in coastal North Carolina and have had really good luck with the "Brown Turkey" fig variety. This is the second year and the plant bore fruit the first year and is well leafed this summer and is currently laden with little green figs.
The only thing we have done this year is to spray with "neem oil". It is doing well and I have been thinking about getting another one. This tree will grow to a height of 15-25 feet and potentially will have a spread of the same. http://www.monrovia.com/plant-catalog/plants/1256/brown-turkey-fig.php I bought mine from a local garden/nursery store with a large selection of shade and fruit trees. I have 2 trees purchased from these guys the fig and a peach tree. Both are doing well. I purchased 14 apple and peach trees from Lowes, all died the first year. I will never buy another tree from Lowes and plan on buying more fruit trees from the local garden/nursery store. |
