Sorry, no pic but I found a beetle on a potato plant this evening. I search google for images but can't seem to track it down.
It's all black with an elongated body but has an orange spot on either side of it's back behind it's head. The one I saw was approximately 3/8 inch long. I looked through literally hundreds of pics but no dice. Any help would be appreciated! |

Sounds like a "box elder bug". Do a Google image search to get an idea of the variety of spotting. There have been lots and lots of these this year due to the rain, you might have them in the area when you didn't before. They are annoying, but harmless. The ones around my house are not bothering my potato plants. (Sweet potato.) Do not crush them, they will stain the surface and they smell pretty bad when crushed.

Don't think it's a box elder, unless there are types that are colored differently. Spied another one tonight and grabbed my camera. Any help on the ID? http://imageshack.us/a/img585/1046/g2u8.jpg Maybe a lightning bug? They do have variations in color/pattern in North America. mm |
