I have one of these on my aunt's generator and they let it sit a couple years with gas in the carburetor. When we turned the fuel line on gas just started rushing out of the air cleaner. I took the carb off, the float was stuck, so I took it apart and the valve float needle and bowl and scraped gunk out for about an hour. Had the float and valve float needle moving freely. Put it back together and same thing. I'm assuming there is gunk all inside the passageways.

Two questions:
1) Should I attempt to rebuild it, and if so where should I get the rebuild kit.

2) Would it be easier in the long run to just buy a new carb, and where should I find one?

For background info, I'm an ASE master auto tech, so I CAN rebuild it, but is it really worth it? I don't know small engines very well so I'm unsure what the issue is, I'd hate to go through a rebuild and have the same problem.

You probably have crap in the air bleed valves. If you have or can get a set of round ignition or carb files this will clean out all the tiny air/fuel passages. Or remove card let it soak in the parts washer for an hour and blow air through carb. I had to do that to my snow blower. Like the saying goes "rather have the tool and not need it, then need it and not have it".

This is going to sound stupid but take out the float needle and turn around the little wire clip that holds the needle to the float.  Nobody can tell me why and I can't see why it matters but if it is not oriented correctly the needle won't seat completely.  Spent a good 3 hours swearing at my mom's snow blower last year.

Try tapping the carburetor bowl with a screwdriver handle while the gas is running out.
