I have the need to kill about 1/2 acre of weeds/grass and figure a small tow or mounted sprayer would be a whole lot easier than my 2 gallon pressure sprayer.  I could then use a bigger sprayer for fertilizing and other stuff. I have a Kubota B2400 and a small tow sprayer in the 15-25 gallon range would be good.  Most sprayers in this size appear to be made for ATVs or lawn tractors.  Will these work on my tractor or can I buy an sprayer made for an ATV and stick it in my FEL and kill everything that needs killin?  If you have any recommendations please share them.

One of the tow sprayers should hook right up to a drawbar on your tractor. Or you could strap it to the FEL turned around backwards like you said. No need, in my opinion, to buy a mounted sprayer for 1/2 acre.

i have a FIMCO 25gal 2.1GPM unit with a spot sprayer hose only –– i use it about 6 times a year on my 2 acres, it does what it is supposed to do and i have no complaints.  i have it mounted on a pair of 2x4's, and then i set the entire thing on my carry-all and go to work.  so far i have only used three chems –– glysophate (aka Roundup), multi-purpose Weed-B-Gon MAX (it's a blend of 2,4-d, Dicamba, and Quinclorac), and Drive XL8R (it's straight high concentration Quinclorac).   the first is death to all green things, the second is a broadleaf weed killer for turfgrass, and the last is for killing crabgrass specifically.  the reason for the straight Quinclorac is because in the process of killing weeds in turfgrass you don't want to plow too much 2,4-D into your trees –– they will not be happy campers.

the unit shown below can also be bought, or set up later, with boom nozzle sprayers or boomless sprayers, for treating large swaths of turfgrass.  as with most small sprayers, this unit is powered by the tractor's 12Vdc system and not by the PTO.

a couple of things to note: 1) don't let unused herbicide sit in the tank and in the pump internals –– sooner or later you are going to have a problem.  so mix it up, use it up, and then rinse the tank and pump out.   2) don't store the unit where it can freeze up –– this will crack the diaphram pump housing etc.   3) get a second hunk of sprayer hose, say 25' or 50' additional, it makes things so much easier.

For a 1/2 acre, the 12 gallon model will do the job.  I have one mounted on the back of my four wheeler and I spray a lot more than a 1/2 acre, places where my 60' boom sprayer will not reach...triple rinse it when complete each time....

I think the atv size would be pefect.  You won't need that much mix to go over that area.

You can make your own boom using a few simple parts.

Once you figure the pressure/gpm your unit produces (I'd verify it with a gauge just to be sure), ground speed you are traveling, and width, coupled with the right tip, you can accurately set your application rate and not waste chemical, which really saves money and gets better results in the long run.  I think I used this stuff, from the local co-op: http://www.teejet.com/english/home.aspx

And what others have said about rinsing out your tank and hoses is spot on, they will last forever, just dipose of the rinse properly.  If you let the chemical sit in your equipment, you will have problems.

I ended up buying a 25gallon countyline model from tractor supply.  It works pretty good but the power supply cord could be about a foot or two longer.  I don't know if I am going to get a longer cord or wire up a 12 volt plug on the back of the tractor. The latter option may provide more options down the road.

Here is the model I bought.

The boom has a break-away feature; that is invaluable.  Looks good!

the broken link is ARFCOM's fault, and it hasn't been fixed in three years.

here's what the link should look like, but it doesn't because of the problem linked above.  it's not your fault.
