What do yall do for your goats?

We're going to get some brush goats after we move to help clean up the woods line and woods. There's woven wire topped with barbwire all around the property right now, but we're going to contain them in 2-3 acres squares at a time (I think). Cant decide if I want to do that much in hog panels or just run a few electric lines.

My neighbor had them and they always were getting out through the electric, watched them many times just slowly going under the wire as if they never felt it, only place they didn't get out was the side where there was field fence between him and the other neighbor. Finally had to get rid of them because he couldn't keep them in the fence and they were getting in neighbors backyards and even got into a house when the lady was cleaning and had a door open. Wish you luck in keeping them, I was going to buy them from him once they cleaned up his 4 acres to turn loose on my property, but decided I didn't want to put up better fences just for them.

You need to buy a heavy gauge wire with small squares. Goats will rub their bodies on the fence and climb up it to get a better look at you.

The "field fence" sold at Lowe's and tractor supply is not heavy enough. It will work and keep them in but no matter how tight you stretch it to begin with they will mess it up.

Tractor supply has fence that is called goat fence heavy wire and small squares so they dont get their head stuck.

We just had baby's 7 weeks ago.

Good advice in the thread, but let me give you the best advice about fencing in goats.

Build the fence, look at it critically and add reinforcements where needed.  Fill the area with water.  Where the water leaks out, those are areas where the goats will escape.  Until it holds water to the level of the top of the posts, expect the goats to escape.

Also, examine any nearby valuables, cars, flower beds, homes.

These are the areas that you will need to remember later when you are trying to locate the escaped goats.  They will either be standing on, in, or inside of these locations.

Examine any valuables that can be injested in these areas.  You will need to take pictures so that you can locate replacements of a similar value on Ebay.

Lastly, go visit with your neighbors.  Laugh, eat and celebrate the community connection that you have.  Later, they will no longer look you in the eye in the supermarket, if they do make eye contact it will be while pointing in your direction to assist law-enforcement better identify you out of a line-up.

enjoy the goats.

I'd listen to him, cowboy.  This man sounds like he knows how to hold a goat.
