Has anyone done this? I'm interested in it as more of an ornamental/novelty. If anyone has any information, thoughts, or recommendations, I'm all ears. Thanks for the help. Feel free to use this thread's carcass for any and all tobacco discussions. ![]() |

I went digging in my stuff and found this:
What I have is Nicotiana sherazi, a fine Persian smoking tobacco strain. This is a non-hybrid open pollinated heirloom strain which means that you can keep making seed forever. I've been growing this in the Baltimore area for about five years and it does great. Shouldn't be any problem in OK. Grow it just like tomatoes or peppers, they are all in the same family, Solanaceae. Use manure or another high N fert and water it like any other plant. They need water but don't like to stand in it. I start the seed indoors 6-8 weeks before frost and transplant outdoors after last frost. You can also direct sowing depending on your temps and the length of your season. I grow in 5 gallon buckets but you can put the plants right into the ground if you have the space. Rich well drained soil and lots of nitrogen (I use manure) because you're growing for leaf. It's easy to grow, there is all kinds of info on the web for growing, curing and preparation. Just Google for "Growing tobacco". Stuff grows tall, 4'-6' and makes a big leafy plant with pretty pink flowers. This was a message between me and ColonelHutrz in April of 2010 |

Quoted: OP I've got some seed that I will give you send me a PM and I'll give you my addy, just include a SASE. This is seed that I got in 2010 from 2009 harvest. All I ask is that if it germinates, is that you save the seed this fall and send me some back. Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it. I already ordered seeds a few days ago, so I am all set. |

Quoted: i have more hours in the tobacco fields then i do in the bathroom. on a mass scale it is BACK BREAKING WORK.... i've never know anyone that ever wanted to grow it for any other reason then to make "a little bit of money".... I don't doubt that, it sounds exhausting. You must spend a lot of time in the bathroom. It is funny how certain things can be enjoyable when you don't HAVE to do them. |

I like victoryseeds.com. All of their stuff is open pollinated and they sell just about everything including Tobacco. I have not ordered from them, but did get seeds from Gurneys and was very disappointed at the germination rates. I wanted to grow some tobacco to use in natural bug killer and to keep stuff away from the garden.
