Okay, I put in some crowns first part of the year. They were a little dried out by the time I got them in, but all of them came up eventually. The asparagus was very thin, so I went ahead and left the plants alone, letting them grow so that the roots could establish and the plants would store nutrients and hopefully give us a little crop next year.
This is Florida, and we're a good two months away from real, sustained cold and of course we don't get snow, so I don't foresee the plants browning up anytime soon. As I'm tilling under and mulching other beds and areas of the garden, I'm wondering when would be a good time to knock this asparagus down to ground level and mulch the bed over? Should I let it be until it gets cold in late November/December, or should I knock it down now/soon so it has some dormancy? |

Doesn't look promising. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/mv013 Up here, I leave them up until they are good a frosted. Late October or November. |

I'm actually in the North-Central area, so it doesn't sound all bad. I only put in a handful of crowns in an out of the way area specifically because I didn't know how well it'd do. I'm thinking I might just knock it down right before our first cold snap, mulch it over with compost, and create a little drought of my own. We'll see what I get out of it next spring. |

What is a good fertilizer to use and how much? I use a 20lb bag of 10-10-10 on an 100 crowns - probably 12 x 32 feet area. That lasts both fertilizings in a year. Otherwise, whatever the local store has in the spring, or cow poop if you can get it free and till it in during the fall. |

I've got some water soluble stuff that's for asparagus, 17-16-28 that looks pretty much like miracle grow , that I use on the 1st year plants. The rest of them seem fine with 10-10-10 and some composted manure. My new bed is 3 years old now and the plants are 6' tall right now. I added some new plants here and there to fill in the rows.
