Anyone have a good online source for a background in fertilizer?

I have started a small garden and need some good general knowledge on how, what, and how often I should fertilize my various plants.

ETA: I was also just hoping to start a conversation about what various fertilizers everyone is using in the various types of soil.

Start with a soil test, after that there are lots of sources online for specific crops needs. If I wasn't on the cell, I would post a link.

I have horses, and every year I feed them alfalfa cubes during the winter, starting in November.  I take the manure and spread it on the garden, then till it in.  I usually start in December, and put a couple of wheelbarrows of it on the garden every couple of weeks.  Since the ground doesn't freeze down here, I usually spread it out and till it in.  Every other year I spread out oyster shells on garden when I'm adding manure to help balance the acid in the soil.  Other than that, I don't really use any fertilizer.
