| I just went to the lumberyard to get a bundle or 2 of onions to plant today...They looked bad...the tops are all brown and dry...will they still grow? |

Light freeze is ok on onions. 15 degrees like we had a few weeks ago is pretty rough. I had mine planted in nursery buckets, so I brought them in the garage with the ice storm, otherwise, I leave them outside.
What I'm saying is to plant now, unless you live in the extreme northern panhandle. |

Planted a bunch of onion seeds in peat pods in a couple of those clear top planting trays , I have a ton of onions up ! Now if I can get them to grow large onions and harvest some seeds form them so I can grow them next year ! The book I have says onions are biannuals. You will have to dig them up and plant them again next year for them to set seed. Now onion sets should be second year and should produce seed. This is the first year I am growing onions from heirloom seeds and not sets. I was planning on collecting seeds for next year until I read this. So I am going to plan B. All I know is what I have read in the book "Seed to Seed" so if anyone has first hand knowlege I would be interested in hearing it. Hope this isn't hijjacking the thread. |
