Friend of mine and I were having a discussion about slaughtering hogs.  I know very little about hogs and was basically trying to learn as much as I could.  He said wild hogs that mature, mainly boars, are not worth eating as the meat smells like someone urinated all over it.

He says this is also true of domestic hogs.  Just having a WTF moment and hoping someone with real hog experience can give me the real scoop.  Thanks.

A very mature wild boar does tend to have a very gamey flavor. I wouldn't describe it as tasting like someone urinated on it. You can catch them when they're a bit younger and feed them on corn for a few months and it'll take a lot of the strong taste out of them.

Wouldn't know about domestic hogs. Never had one that was that old.

I've never dealt with wild pigs a all. I've slaughtered/butchered countless domestic hogs. Pork, like all meat has a taste peculiar to the species. I like pork flavor better than any other meat there is. But, sometimes I'll be eating pork and suddenly the meat tastes like a hog pen smells. I can't take another bite. I've experienced this with beef and venison too.

I've always said that if someone had never eaten pork before in their life and smelled a hog pen for the very first time, they would never be able to start eating pork. So I know what your friend is experiencing.

I took two 150lb boars this past November.  They were plenty mature, and neither of them tasted or smelled like someone urinated on the meat.

If you keep everything clean, you won't notice a difference.  Your friend seems full of tall tales.

Perhaps he is talking about boar taint?

Disclosure –– I know nothing about raising hogs, but I do read that guy's blog occasionally as I find it humorous and educational.  FordGuy I bet you would enjoy reading it as well.

"Boar taint" is real, but I don't think it should worry anybody raising domestic hogs. Nobody I know feeds out intact hogs.

I guess with wild pigs you get what you get.
