I like cooking with instant rice just because of the shorter cook time. Does it store as well for SHTF occassions as regular rice? Seems the shorter cooking time would be a plus if trying to conserve fuel.

Also, I normally cook rice with a teaspoon or so of butter or margarine. Would standard canola oil have the same affect if I added a powered butter substitute for flavor?

Btw- a little Tony Chachere's creole seasoning does wonders if added to plain rice during cooking.

If you have salt just oil does ok on rice, powdered butter would be a plus I guess. To your question, just price it out and what do you come up with. I don't know what a fifty lb bag of instant costs or how much room it takes up but normal rice will beat it anyway you want to look at it except for ease of preparation.
You can soak rice as you would beans to shorten cooking time and fuel consumption.
