I currently have a Luhr-Jensen Electric Smoker. It is about 4 years old. I have only used it about 6-8 times. A few weeks ago I did some jerkey (turned out fine) on it. The problem I saw was it was taking an hour to 1.5 hours to burn a pan of wood chips. Before it took about 20-25 minutes so I'm thinking there is probably something wrong. The other thing with it is there is no heat control at all. The shell is very thin and looses a lot of the heat made.
Any ways my questions: How many of you use a electric smoker as opposed to a wood smoker? I am considering buying something new. I don't want to invest a fortune in it since I don't use it alot. Maybe I would use a better unit more????? What mfgs. are good and what one not so much? I looked at a charcoal grill at Lowes that has an optional add on smoker unit that goes on the side. The two pieces are $170. Tell me what is out there and what you all are using. Thanks in advance for the input |

I have a Brinkmann smoker n grill that I bought at Home Depot for $35 (they normally have them every year). Works great as i do not smoke very much but will rectify that situation next year.
I have not done jerky in it but the smoked chickens and beef roast came out awesome! watch your temps and time! This is similar to the one i have: Brinkmann Smoker ETA: This is a charcoal-fired smoker. |

I had read thru that thread already but was curious about if any one was using the ones with the side mount smoke box and how they liked them. I was in again today and looked at the one at lowes. It is a Char-Griller brand. The grill part is $99 and the add on box is 69. 810"cooking area on the main grill and an additional 250 on the side. I see a lot of reference in the thread you highlight about electric smokers and also the weber charcoal smokers. Not anything on the ones I mention Thanks again |
