I've got them coming out of my ass, and there's a shitload that are still green. Only one plant too!
What do I do with them all? They're great, but I can only eat so many tomatoes, and I have Roma's and Cherokee Purples coming in as well (just not in the same numbers). 1 Cherokee purple, 2 roma's, 1 grape this year. Next year I'm going to do a lot more I think, and plan on canning a bunch and giving a bunch away. My mother-in-law usually can's up some of my tomatoes, but she typically does the roma's. Can you can up the little ones too? How much of a pain in the ass is it w/ little ones? Second: The Cherokee Purples are my first heirloom tomatos and they're awesome. I'd be interested in trading seeds w/ others for different varieties for next year. Thanks! K |

Grape tomatoes? Is that a variety that falls into the small size category of what I usually call "Cherry tomatoes"?
I have about 8 cherry tomato plants (using the term generically) and they are being quite prolific right now ... but then my wife loves them, so I have no doubt they will disappear about as fast as they come ripe. I'll have to ask her about canning them - she would probably know. My Brandywines (7 plants) and roma's (1 plant) tho aren't being as prolific as I'd like. I was hoping to get a mess of Roma's to can, but if I get one meal with sauce out of them, I think I'll be lucky this year. |

Hmmm... I'm not a tomato person, but I don't see why you couldn't can them. Or get a food mill and make sauce with them and can that (it would probably be less labor intensive).
Otherwise, I believe you can freeze them as well, as long as you don't plan to eat them uncooked because they'll get mushy. If you plan to use them in some sort of cooking, I believe you can just freeze away! |

Quoted: Clean, let dry, spread on a cookie sheet, put into freezer. Once frozen put them into a freezer bag or vacuum seal them and return to freezer. You can use them in recipes over the winter. I do the same with the Roma's, just cut the core out first. That is a damn good idea. Thanks! |
