Look at these beauties.  First time baking bread.  Simple white bread recipe.  The mess I made was ridiculous.  How cost effective is baking your own vs buying considering ingredients, electricity (oven), etc.?  I enjoyed it and will do it again attempting more gourmet type loaves.

Ya know I like making my own bread but thats an interesting question about the cost... I have thought one way of making things cheaper would be trying to bake it in a dutch oven? I just got a new house and im building a firepit so I can do more cooking with natures cheap fuel... thread to follow on that

Cost of buying a loaf is cheaper lol.  Mass production and all that unless you are really buying flour in bulk or maybe milling.

With that said, the nutrition of the simple white bread you made is off the charts compared to store bought.  That's were it's worth it in bread.

Just be careful.  Once I started baking it, I learned I lost money.  I ate twice as much of the damned stuff.

No one in the family will ever complain you are spending to much money making fresh bread.

Build an adobe oven to bake your bread in outside.  You make enough dough to make a weeks worth of bread build a fire in the oven to get it good and hot and then after getting them ready just bake your loaves.  There are plans on the Internet.  I did see one that had a chimney which would vent your heat out so I don't like it.  I have a magazine that has really good plans on how to build one.

I agree with the comments on quality, taste & just plain goodness. But we pay about the same to make it as for premium bread from wally-martinez;
here's the big diffrence; we can store the ingredients alot longer w/o refridgeration than store bought bread.

We picked up 2 bread machines at Goodwill for around $10 each; my wife homeschools our kids, so staying home & making bread
isn't that much. We get the 50 lb. bags of flour at Costco for less than $10.   YMMV

It will certainly be more nutritious than store bought.  I grind my own flour so I would imagine my costs are pretty cheap.

Baking bread in a dutch oven sounds interesting.  Never tried it.
