Unless something else takes priority, i will be building my potato box this week end and planting. I think i am going to make it out of old skid boards from work if I can find enough of them.

I don't have sawdust available so am thinking of using peat moss or yard waste.

As it turns out, some potatos we had inside started germinating yesterday so I expect to not have to buy any seed potatoes. They are the little red ones my wife likes. Any problem with using them? I seem to recall someone said somewhere along the line that there are some potato varieties you annot grow in a box like this.

How many plants do you think I can do? Nine?

Peat tends to fall on the acid side of the spectrum. You will probably have to mix it with some other stuff, or amend it to balance the ph a little. If you buy a "peat-based" soil mix, it might be fine, as it'll already be a little better balanced.   If you're using yard waste that will probably balance it out too, but if it's not composted already, you may run into some trouble with your ph and nitrogen levels going a little wonky.   Don't let this stop you if you want to try it.  Just pay attention to your ph.  If you start noticing trouble, look closer at it.
