For my job I am on the road daily. Looking at all these theads and trying to think about using preps, I was trying to come up with a meal that could be made, cheaply, with beans, rice or other long term stored food. Any recommendations? I do not have a way of heating up, but can keep it cool in a cooler.

Thanks

To heat up put in tin foil and put on engine.

Or buy an esbit stove and heat it a rest stop or something. You can buy the stoves and fuel tabs for less than $10 at any Big 5 or Sporting Good Store.

While I was going through paramedic school, I worked on garage doors for a living and stayed broke.  I usually ate chef boyardee for lunch everyday.  I would lift the hood and place the can on top of the engine so that it would not fall off or disconnect anything important.  By lunch time the cans would always be nice and hot, but not so much that the cans ever bulged or exploded.  Be warned, you will get a lot of funny looks driving down the road eating ravioli out of a can.

+1 on the canned food on the motor. They will blow up if its hot enough though, easy way to avoid that is just cracking the lid a little. As far as cold food, I always enjoyed tuna or chicken salad. Makes for good sandwiches.

Make your hot food at home and pack it in a Wide mouth Thermos.

Stanley makes a nice one.

A bunch of meals can be "cooked" right in the thermos,  Just put the stuff in and add boiling water and put the lid on.  Take the lid off at lunchtime and dig in.
