This year I planted some White Granix and some Walla Walla onions.  What is supposed to be the difference?  I planted them late (24th of April).  They both looked great for a long time.  The Walla's still look and taste great but the Granix seem to be dying back.  It isn't time for them to be picked yet is it.  I have been using the Wallas' in salads as they are very mild.  I pulled a few bulbs from the Granix and they are very small.  Is one a "long day" vs "short day"?
Also, how long can I leave them in the ground after they die back before they rot?

if they are wala walla sweets, when the tops lay down, pick them and top them, leave the onions an the ground with the tops over them ( to keep the sun  from burning them) leave for about three days to dry then put them in a cool dry place, we plant walla walla sweets in september and they are ready by fathers day, great onions
