I see where a lot of folks store popcorn for grinding into cornmeal or for other LTS purposes.  Why popcorn vs. regular shelled corn from the feedmill?

Personally, because you can pop it, or grind it and use it as corn meal.

I would say probably more accessible.  Pop corn is available at the local super market. Regular shelled corn you have to go to a place that carries it.

Pop corn is a special strain of corn that is hard all the way around, and when you heat it to the point where the water turns into steam, and bursts this hard shell and voila popped corn.

Thanks for the idea, I haven't thought about that.

From Here

"Popcorn is one form of a whole grain available to nearly everyone in the U.S. if they know where to look. Since it's so popular as a snack food, particularly in movie theaters and events like fairs and ball games, even the smallest of towns will generally have at least one business selling it in twenty five or fifty pound bags. Since it's meant to be eaten it's safe for food. To be at its most poppable, this corn needs to have a moisture content between 13.5%-15.5% which makes it just a little too moist for ideal storage. A small amount of drying will need to be done before it's packed away. If wanted for popping later, it can always be re-hydrated by sprinkling a small amount of water on the kernels, shaking vigorously and allowing it to be absorbed."

We always used an electronic device to measure moisture on the farm.  There, we either used a gas fired dryer, or just forced air through the grain in the grain bin.

Spreading the popcorn out in a low moisture area and blowing air over it will help.  Putting it in the oven under LOW heat might work too.

basically opening the bag for 6 months will dry it out just fine.  tha's why it won't pop after being opened a while.
