An item I see ignored or just missed a lot in storage listings is comfort foods.  If you have kids, this is even more important.

Hard candy is an excellent comfort food.  It is pretty much pure sugar and sugar analogs (corn syrup, etc.) and will last close enough to forever not to matter.

Right after Christmas, Easter and Halloween, go to Wal*Mart, Dollar General, Fred's or whatever and get regular hard candy for next to free.  Mix it up in quart freezer bags, seal them up and put them in a 5 gallon bucket, with a mylar liner.

I've got a ton of hard candy...literally.  

About 20 cases of the old Civil Defense hard candy still sealed in the 5 gallon square metal cans.
