Just picked up a Medium Alice pack from Old Grouch's sale.    I've always loved the utility and look of the malice pack.  What are some must do mods.  I grabbed a set of molle shoulder straps as well as a MSS bag for my sleeping bag.

It looks like most of the sites with detailed photos on how to do the mod link back to the Liberty Tree Blog or an archived thread here with broken photo links.  And either Liberty Tree's Photobucket account is toast, he's pulled all the photos, or Photobucket is having problems.  The desktop I used when I first posted the link that had all the photos load successfully will no longer load any of them.

If they start working again I'll duplicate his work in this thread for reference purposes.

Hmm . . . your avatar and the Liberty Tree page both with M1's at about 35° . . . coincidence?

ETA:  I've got the page and all its contents downloaded.  I'll find a suitable photo storage site and create a duplicate here giving credit to the original author.

Total coincidence, and no connection.  I think it would be a courtesy to e-mail him asking permission.  When creating your duplicate, please include a (preferably) live link to the Liberty Tree blog, as well as giving full credit to the blogger.  I think that's fair to him.

I picked up some molle II shoulder straps from Old grouch and from most of the tutorials I've seen it looks like there are supposed 2 short straps that feed through the the slot on the upper part of the alice frame and attach to the top of the shoulder straps.  My shoulder straps didn't come with these extra pieces.   I don't see those pieces on the old grouch website so wondering if they aren't needed to properly attach the straps to the pack?

just spoke with Tim at old grouch.  It appears as if the newer Molle II straps don't have that 2 piece configuration and I'm good to go.  Woot.

Any of the upgrade donor items available in plain OD green?

Have an older green Alice that I want to use as a donor, but keen to keep it plain/surplus (boring) looking & avoid camo. add-ons if possible

Ordered a hellcat and a standard Alice frame with the shelves from Old Grouch last week. Alice and shelves showed up, no word on the hellcat though.

I'm going to swap out the straps on the shelf model for some Molle 2 straps and start adding weight to my walks in the morning.

Any of the Molle shoulder straps and waist belts aren't going to be available in OD green.
The first Molle set up was available in Woodland and Desert then the Universal Camo pattern.

A set of woodland shoulder straps and waist belt on an OD Alice isn't a bad looking piece of kit.
Nor is Rit dyed desert camo.

Raf did the Rit dye encyclopedia thread a few years back. Search for it. You might be able to dye something to a plain green to suit your needs.

Old grouch had a simple youtube video on the alice stuff, like adding a waist belt extender for use with your winter gear, and I forget what else they have.

Just messing around on youtube should turn up plenty I would expect.

With a reasonable ar, I call em midgrade quality if assembled by hand and spending 5 to 6 hundred bucks, some alice stuff can round it out depending on what a person wants.  Some mag carriers and stuff for the truck and a canteen or two, alice stuff is cheap and easy to use.

Out here in rural tn a lot of folks don't go to "real ranges" and if shooting on someone's property it is nice to be able to easily carry a few mags and this and that.

Not knocking the hellcat stuff or anything, but there are a lot of vids around.  I am winding down from a long day and going back to work after a nap so not about to go search my links.  I need a nap before another 8.5 hr shift.

I run an alice pack on a molle frame with molle straps. Stupid cheap and easy to do. Replaced a bunch of hardware with buckles also.

You can kinda see it here behind my AK.

I guess in my eyes at some point in a real problem, greyman isn't going to mean much. I'd rather have multiples of effective gear, than drop $1000 on a pack and pouch setup and have to ditch it or tear it up. If I wear out an alice pack, I throw another pack on the frame from the closet and we're off running again.

I used to be really into Gucci tactical gear, now I just want stuff that is replaceable and cheap.

i got the Molle II shoulder straps for my Alice pack.  There is a buckle on the straps but I can't find a way to buckle the shoulder straps to the frame securely.  I found a couple of vids showing people mounting the Molle II straps to an alice frame, but they didn't use the buckle they simply tied the straps to the frame.  That seems a little insecure to me.  Is there a way (link/directions) to mounting the molle II straps to an Alice frame somewhere?

The Alice pack attaches to the DE 1606 frame using the straps, and frame pocket already on the ALICE pack.  http://downeastinc.com/Products.php/?Link=1606AC

BUT, in using the DE 1606 frame, one also must use the MOLLE II waist belt and shoulder straps.  Some have suggested adapting ALICE shoulder straps and kidney belt for use with the DE 1606 frame, but I definitely do not recommend doing so.  BTDT.

I believe you're correct.  I don't recommend using that frame because the 1606 was specifically made to interface with the ALICE, and the original MOLLE frame was not.  Sure, you can cut it up and/or install a buttload of lashings.  You can swim the English channel with an anvil on your back, too.  Point is why would want to do things the hard way when the easy way is so--- easy?

Roger, that's why I was asking how he attached it.  I've looked into it before and it looks like a royal pain to lash it to the frame so I was wondering if he lashed it or somehow attached it another way I haven't seen before.

Thanks!

Actually, yes I did attach it to the 1603 large Molle frame. Was actually pretty easy, once I figured it out.

Backpack straps go through the top hole, down through the large hole. Then inward to the 45 degree hole, across and outward to out and in the outer vertical holes. Bottom was simpler as you would guess.

Molle straps were actually harder to figure out than than attaching the pack to the frame. I went with the 1603 as they are super cheap around here, as are the Alice packs.

Hope that clears it up some, and the pics are helpful.  I also swapped plastic buckles whenever I could.

I'll eventually add a handle across the top gap to make hand carrying it easier.

Has anyone sent off their Alice pack to Tactical Tailor for modding?

Thinking of sending mine off for seam reinforcing, half molle panels on both sides, hydration bladder liner and fasted buckle swap.

I would strong suggest to everyone that has an ALICE pack to invest in a Downeast Frame.

They are incredibly comfortable and sturdy. I love both of mine. One for a Med Alice, one for a Large Alice.

I agree the DE frames absolutely make a decent pack into a killer one. Doubly so, given that the 1603 frames go for as low a $5 on ebay.  Average is $20 delivered.  The 1606 mas made for a drop in type fit with the alice pack, but they are much more expensive. The 1603 will work with a little patience, on mine I used a "molle buckle" repair kit. Pretty much all the buckles needed for my alice pack upgrade, about $7.50 for a kit.

[#35]
Appreciate the pics.  Got one of those plastic frames running around here somewhere and I know I have some extra alice packs cause I just like em for storing stuff.

Reminds me of the pic threads in the armory section, gonna have to spend some time over there.

And I am sure some youtube time is coming up as well.

For those who want to make your own sling for a rifle or mess with what you have, the buckle kits and other similar stuff can be a cheap way to get some things to play with and mess with.

I was never properly taught to shoot with a sling, mostly my own fault for not asking those who know how.  Working on making some changes and being able to change things cheaply makes the most sense to me.  Then if I decide something spiffy would do away with some of the silliness I create, I learned cheaply and don't mind spending the money once as long as it is well spent.

Still planning on moving up to a Mystery Ranch pack over the winter though, but these will serve as reserve.

Yes....but it was many years ago.  My modified ALICE has: Claymore pocket, fastex upgrade, full MOLLE panels on both sides, stitching reinforcment storm flap, and I had them remove the 3 small pockets above the main center one and replace that with single large zippered pouch.

Now with their Rhino Ruck I don't see much of a point to modding a LG ALICE.  To mod up an ALICE the way I like it, it becomes cost prohibitive quite quickly.

I had a spare 1603 that I gave $5 for. I also had a pic of a 1606 and a jigsaw. Took about 20 minutes. It's on a Med Alice right now.

there is a lot of great info in that link. Thanks for posting.  I'm curious about how to properly set up the shoulder strap length as it attaches to the frame.  I see that "enforcer" has a tutorial in that link (page 9)but his pic's aren't working anymore and I'm not sure what the torso attachment strap is and how high the pack should ride.  Can anyone point me in the right direction for proper fit of the pack?

At this point I'd be leery of Old Grouch. Always had good luck with them, up until 6 months ago. They're sending out beat up gear ( not just well used) and I still haven't gotten my Molle II belt 2 weeks later. Supposedly shipped out last Monday, and packages from them never take more than 2 days to get to me here in VA.

The pack they sent with the hellcat kit was torn, the liner for the flap is disintegrating, there were seams coming undone, just overall poor. The Molle Straps were fine, but the missing belt has rendered the setup useless.

Wishing I'd just bought a Son of Alice from DE and done the buy once cry once.
