I have one of these and it was brand new when I got it. I have never used one before and this thing leaves the water tasting like plastic. I have cleaned it with bleach, baking soda, boiling water. Nothing gets rid of the plastic taste.
Is this just something that all of these do? |

The taste comes from that Source hose.
I have several of these bladders and I isolated the taste to the hoses. Get yourself a Camelbak Pureflow Tube. Cut the fittings off the Source hose and put them on the Camelbak. The diameter of the Camelbak is a little smaller than the Source but a soak in hot water makes it plenty pliable enough to work. No more crappy plastic disgusting taste! The Source bladders are great but where the hell the hose comes from, well, maybe I don't want to know. There are hose covers available also. |

Where do you guys get your source bladders? I've got an empty carrier that came with my ILBE pack. I bought a new Source bladder from a guy selling them in Israel, some four years back, which is where they're made, IIRC. I think that I paid $33, or $36 shipped. I've only fiddled with mine a couple of times and didn't notice any 'off taste,' but that was back them and only a brief trial. I did buy a minty, used USMC holder for it, for about $7 shipped and both work well together. Chris |

Storage tip: after a FTX I would throw a capful of Listerine in the reservoir and suck it through the hose to cut down on bacteria growth. tried the vinegar for 1 hr at a time...then lemon at 1 hr at a time...for a week or two...and finally taste was no longer there, or I just got used to it. I did the Listerine and found this best way to sanitize vs air dry. It's minty fresh every use. |
