I have never packed a tarp in my pack, I have always used a tent.  Wanting to take out the tent for spring, summer and early fall and put the tent back in for fall and winter to save on weight.

What kind of tarps is everyone using?  The Walmart plastic ones or more of a ripstop fabric?

Any info would  be appreciated.

The generic plastic ones will work but they are not light weight for there size. I have been using them for years and been happy with them.

A silnylon tarp is the standard backpacking tarp but there are others as well.

They are selling for 40% off right now on Amazon. Best price I have seen. I might even buy another one for that price.

I have the Aqua Quest tarp recommended above by Benjamin-Linus.  I took it backpacking.  It works well, and it probably the Chuck Norris of waterproof tarps.

However.. it is HEAVY.

If you are looking for lightweight and have a decent budget, SIL nylon tarps are amazing.

Here is an example.

Build your own its cheaper....kinda LOL .

Silnylon is where it is (was)  now there's cuben fiber. But expect to pay twice.

Weight is key. You don't need extra super reinforced tie out corners etc. It helps I guess but not needed. I don't on mine and they gone thru hell (aka 8+ years of use)
A 8*10 sil tarp can weigh less than 8-10oz.
Mine with tie out lines..stakes and stuff sack is 13 iirc.

But don't over look basic nylon if you got a budget.  You'll just not have the weight savings and it'll be a Tad bulky.

IN for the answer.

FWIW, we keep one of these plastic drop clothes, clothes pins and paracord in every BOB and vehicle....pretty handy for $1 (dollar tree).

Rab used to be Integral Designs. I have some older Siltarps by Integral Designs and they are solid Siltarps.  I've heard Rab still offers solid customer service and the same level of quality products.

The best place for do it yourself tarp materials is ripstopbytheroll.com

If I were you I would look at Warbonnet Outdoors SuperFly tarp.  Tons of coverage for rainy/windy conditions.  Get yourself a Blackbird XLC hammock and you're good to go.
