Can you use other types of rechargeable batteries in the guide 10 plus?  Such as eneloops, or are you required to only use the guide zero batteries?

Yes, you can use any brand of NiMH and possibly other chemistries; I do so daily.

How do you find the unit compares to the actual claims?  This is more of a preparedness item I'm considering adding in case of emergency.

I decided to standardize my hurricane electronics to AAs where possible, choosing Sanyo Eneloops... I retired as a high school science teacher about the same time, and wanted to fool around with a small scale solar unit, and purchased a Goal Zero 7w panel without the Guide 10 battery pack... I selected a Fujicell SCH 808F charger due to its multiple input options... Eneloops come partially charged, and I did not have a multimeter so did not measure the starting voltage, but got a couple of bars on the charger display... using the 120v ac input it took a little over 1/2 hour to fully charge 4 of the Eneloops.... using the 12v cigarette receptacle on the GZ panel the other 4 Eneloops took about 3 hours to charge....again, not scientific... when I purchased an older, non plus version of the Guide 10 battery pack, using the USB port it took slightly less than 3 hours... I was not watching constantly, so again this is not very specific.... I have since obtained a 94 Ahr deep discharge battery and cigarette receptacle to augment my charging capabilities

Overall I like it, but prefer Powerfilm kits for the sake of less fragile components. I don't take the rigid GZ kits out on the trail, it's Powerfilm all the way in those cases. I do keep a few GZ panel sets and a Boulder at home for charging various things.
