I live in a small apartment and my wife watches another 1yr old along with our daughter to earn some extra cash. We occasionally have visitors, maintenance guys, and then the two little ones.
I'd like to hear some thoughts on a keypad lock door knob for a walk-in closet turned man cave.

I've got the safe, lock boxes, file cabinets, ammo, reloading supplies, etc in that walk-in closet.
I'm not locking for extra security, more so privacy.

Also, most seem to be around $100, is there a cheaper option I'm not seeing?

I'm also not worried about the apartment lease FWIW

why not just use a keyed door knob?

I did the same thing when I lived in my apartment. And before any smart ass jumps in with the, "A lock will make it obvious something is in there or They can just kick the week door down." Yes however if someone gets through the main door they are gone for sure if there is no lock and my reason for locking was also for kids and friends and other people that didn't need access to the closet.

Maybe check with salvage places locally.  You might be able to get one for less.

You might still come out ahead just buying something new you can return if it doesn't work.  Maybe something like this.

any keyed lock from any number of home supply stores. they will provide the same security as the keypad lock you posted.

I simply went to the hardware store and bought an exterior lock set and installed it.  It doesn't provide the greatest security but it will keep a curious person honest and will somewhat slow down a bad guy.

Lt. I think he is thinking along the same route as what I would like.  I do not carry keys in my house.  I would much rather just enter a code and get it, then need to have a key with me.  Yeah a keyed lockset would be cheaper but much less convenient for some.

I am using a lock similar to this one:  Schlage on a closet.  Its not so much to keep criminals out as to keep our 3 year old away from the guns.  I keep a few out where they can be accessed quickly and we don't have space for a safe in the house.  We use the same lock on the door we use to access the house.

You don't need all that to keep a three year-old out of a closet and even WITH that lock the door itself will be no match for an adult thief.  A keyed door knob will do the trick.  Home Depot will have a wide selection.  Starting with cheapos like these that are under $10:

And, it won't scream valuables!!

I don't want to have to keep up with keys for daily use.  I also do not want slide latches, or gate latches on my doors.  I know how easy it is for a kid to defeat those.  I have seen it and even did it as a kid.   As for keeping adults out, it does that purpose as well.  Not criminals, but casual people that may enter my home and accidentally try to open the door thinking its the bathroom or basement door etc.  Again, instead of trying to hide a key nearby, I simply enter the code when I enter.  I also do not need to remember to relock it as it instantly locks unless you set the switch to keep it unlocked.

The OP was asking for ideas to keep a kid and casual observers out.  That is what I offered.

I have a similar issue as the OP - I want to keep the little ones out of the gun room/workshop.  I've been procrastinating, but the thread had me pecking around Amazon and I came across these:

Combi-Bolt

Keyless Electronic Lock

Most of the other quality choices appear to be $100 or more.
